42. 2014 season review (The one with the Box of Neutrals crossover)
It’s been a long time coming, but apart from covering the final throws of F1 news for the year, the third round of the Formula E and giving the SuperQuiz one final crack for 2014, we can finally unveil the cross-over that our audience has been demanding for so long.
Throughout history there have been numerous meetings of the minds, two brilliant entities coming together to advance the cause of humanity; Socrates and Aristotle, Albert Einstein and Mileva Maric… Larry Emdur and David Koch.
For the first time Superlicense and Box of Neutrals have joined forces, and the result is truly epic. For over two hours the trials of tribulations of the 2014 F1 season are hashed out, with many pointless divergencies and indefensible examples of slander. We thought it was a fantastic way to finish off the year, there’s certainly plenty of content here to tide you over for a while and there’ll be plenty more to come in 2015 so that’s about all we have to say about that.
We want to say a massive thanks to the following people for their assistance and support throughout the year:
- Paul Crowder, director of 1: Life on the limit
- Nathan Harper, head mogul at Beer Mogul games and creator of Formula Legend
- Kate Walker
- Trent Price
- Janice Rochford for having us on the E-lectric Formula E Podcast
- Michael, Rob and Peter from Box of Neutrals for their support throughout the year and taking part in this week’s epic podcast cross-over
And last but not least YOU THE LISTENERS!

41. Abu Dhabi (The definitely not breaking up show)
*** Details of the Superlicense Melbourne meet-up are on the Facebook page ***
Well we did it. We know who won, the high is wearing off but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun talking about the race, and contest that never was and touch on the Formula E, a Fame and Fortune SuperQuiz and some of the best audio predictions you will ever (yeah, EVER) hear!
You won’t want to miss this one AND we still have a season review episode to come – good times.
Show notes:
- Direct link to the Melbourne meet-up on the Facebook page
- Vettel has arrived at Ferrari for the (really) pre-season testing and it’s super awks
- Watch a truck jump an F1 car, amazeballs
- All round brilliant human Innocent Steph sent us some delicious biscuits so we thought we’d document the occasion
- Check us out on the E-lectric Podcast for the preview episode of the Malaysian GP (many more to come hopefully)
- The indie game that Zach mentioned is called “Thomas Was Alone” and it’s available for iPhone/iPad (and probably other things). Recommended!
- Here’s the super-embarrassing interview with Bernie E where he pretty much makes a mockery of Formula One
- AND finally here’s friend of the show Nathan and fantastic listener David‘s Movember pages, please support them if you can!

40. Brazil GP (A bit of horse-arsery)
Oh man, we’ve reached episode 40 which explains those aches and pains!
This week we’ll deconstruct the Brazilian GP, Rod tests Zach’s knowledge of championships this went down to the wire, F1 dreams gets a run and we use up all the of the champagne.
*** Superlicense meet-up drinks will be planned before Zach takes off for the UK, so stay tuned if you live in the greater Melbourne area! ***
Show notes:
- Eddie Jordan interviews Bernie Ecclestone
- GIF of Massa pulling into the Mclaren pit
- GIF of the camera angle when Kvyat overtook Perez
- Here’s the video of Grosjean designing his helmet (select “CC” and select English, if you don’t speak French)
- That thing where you change things you observe is called the “Observer Effect” and it’s closely related to Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle

39. Austin GP (BBQ Happy Hour)
Yeeeehaw! Well that podcast title kind of writes itself doesn’t it. Things get a bit schizophrenic this week we manage to pull it together to talk about the Austin Grand Prix, there’s an unexplained horse race in there somewhere, references to obscure podcasts that you’ll either love or hate (we hope you’ll love it) and we caught up with one of the most dapper men in F1, the one and only Mr Trent Price.
Show notes:
- So, you should listen to Serial podcast. Seriously, it’s Rod and Zach endorsed.
- Here’s Trent Price’s twitter account, and here’s his little chat with K-Mag
- Gif of Alonso versus Button
- And here’s JEV versus Grossshhhitt they were nearly three abreast going through there
- Annnnnnd speaking of being abreast… this is the boobified champagne glass Rod was talking about. It’s Kate Moss, not Tara Moss. Der.

38. Russian GP (And other adjacent jokes)
in Soviet Russia podcast listens to you…. WELCOME back to the Superlicense F1 Podcast after a slight delay. With a return to “normal” we discuss F1 news headlines from the last three weeks or so, recap the race and this week’s quiz tests what you know about F1 slang terms.
It’s a little longer due to F1 Dreams, and just generally we felt we owed a little more to the community so lean back or set that treadmill to “extreme” and enjoy!
Show notes:
- Jenson Button’s on-board lap of Mt Panorama home of the Bathurst 5000
- Here’s the full “Monkey News” that Rod was referencing…
- And here’s every “Monkey News” ever because internet
- Check out Zach’s other favourite design podcast The Nudge, they are great guys and wicked smart

37. Japanese GP (#ForzaJules)
With Jules Bianchi in our hearts, Rod and Zach discuss a very difficult week for F1 in a slightly different incarnation of the Superlicense F1 Podcast.
While we await (hopefully positive) news regarding Jules following his horrific crash, we discuss the race, preview the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi and feature a chat with F1 journalist Kate Walker via dodgy hotel WiFi (starts around the 31 min mark and seriously, the audio quality starts off poor then gets much better). Hopefully it’ll get you back in the mood for Formula One because Sochi will be here before you know it.
Show notes:
- Rod’s thoughts on Jules Bianchi’s incident for The Roar
- BBC produced “vignette” featuring David Coulthard and Sebastian Vettel previewing the Sochi F1 circuit
- And Vettel’s first lap of the complete track
- Massive thanks to Kate Walker, please come back any time Kate, check her out on Twitter, ESPN, her personal website and of-course… Instagram

36. Singapore GP (Handy on a Luge)
Zach and Rod make a triumphant return from their week in Singapore to rip through all the news, happenings and good vibes from the Singapore Grand Prix. It wouldn’t be an episode of Superlicense if it didn’t go far longer than necessary, but to be fair we also touched on the inaugural Formula E race, a listener F1 dream and much more.
Show notes:
- Because the episode was going to be a few days late we recorded this video on our hotel rooftop (yeah, poolside)
- Heidfeld’s spectacular crash to start the Formula E season
- Rod’s piece for Last Word on Sport arguing that Formula E would have been better off ditching the drivers’ championship. Crazy? Perhaps…
- Just so the F1 fans don’t feel left out, he also wrote about the F1 Grand Prix (yeah, also poolside)
- And here’s Justin Timberlake not catching a basketball

35. Italian GP (Monza is a Flat Circle)
M-M-M-M-Monza! I’m pretty sure if there’s one place in the entire world that a pretty lady could get away with actual murder it’s the Italian GP. Rod and Zach discuss the race, breakdown all the news that fit to print, Zach excels in the “Were They Teammates?” SuperQuiz and we reference far too many non-F1 things to mention here.
Show notes:
- Great work from Lewis Hamilton to recover from this horrendous start
- One of Ricciardo’s best moves of the race was this one on Sergio Perez
- Even Hamilton doesn’t like the podium boo-ing, so can we all just agree not to do it?
- A report on how/why/who? the FIA are going to limit team radio

34. Belgian GP (Orange is the new JEV)
Well, the summer break is well and truly over and if you thought some time away was going to allow the drivers to cool off you’ve got another thing coming my friend! We decompress the race for probably far too long, unleash the Superlicense Predictions Podium, Zach slaps Rod with a Spa Francorchamps quiz and there’s many references to Bane for some reason. Enjoy!
Show notes:
- Our mate Michael Lamonato from Box of Neutrals wrote up this piece about F1 and embracing the 21st century
- Rod’s “no holds barred” review of the Belgian Grand Prix and the icky aftermath
- Turns out many people have made a scalectrix kit of Spa, but here’s a good one
- What a lame-o Zach is that he’s never heard of Monty Python’s “Fish Slapping Dance”?

32. Hungarian GP (Halt and Fall Before it Exists)
Ahhhhhhhhhh, it’s the last race before the summer break – we rip into the controversial Hungarian Grand Prix, Zach gives us a quiz about food and food adjacent food-like things, we finally get to break some news on the podcast (although, with a 24 hour delay between recording and getting the episode edited and released it’s not new anymore… shhhhh, you never heard anything) and we sizzle our Summer Break Episode!
SPRING BREAAAAKKKK, yeah!
Show notes:
- Rod failed to deliver a race review after the German GP, but made up for it with this killer recap of Hungary.
- Maybe have a bizarro photo of Sebastian Vettel while you’re on a roll.
- Colin Kolles IS a dentist, we weren’t making that up.
- I hope you’ve seen Halt and Catch Fire otherwise the title will make no sense (or less sense anyway).
